We The Kings at Starland Ballroom

October 21, 2009

October 17– Known for their ultra-catchy singles, the band We The Kings opened up for All Time Low during the Glamour Kills tour. Although they were considered an “opening” band, they rocked with the best of them, and had nearly every member of the crowd singing and dancing along.

Playing a relatively short set, WTK made sure each song they played did their job well. Combining singles Check Yes Juliet, Skyway Avenue, and Secret Valentine with crowd-pleasing songs such as Stay Young and Whoa, fans of We The Kings as well as non-fans were pleasantly entertained. The band also played a new song, entitled She Takes Me High, that will be featured on their new LP, “Smile, Kid”, to be released on December 8th, as well as a spot-on cover of Jimmy Eat World’s The Middle.

Performance wise, WTK played excellently, and it was easy to see the band was enjoying their time on stage. Frontman Travis Clark kept the energy up, yet he was unmatched compared to guitarist Hunter Thomsen, who constantly stayed in motion throughout the entire set. Sadly, I was not able to photograph bassist Drew Thomsen due to my position, and I was only able to snag a single photo of drummer Danny Duncan.

As I have never attended a show in which We The Kings headlined, I have not been able to experience a full length set from this band– I feel as if a headlining show would be beneficial to this band, as I very much enjoy their shortened supporting sets. Once I attend a headlining performance of We The Kings, I will be able to give them a thorough review, but from what I have experienced so far, they are a great live band, and are worth the price of a concert ticket to see them.
